I went to a great event at the RNLI headquarters in Poole a couple of weeks ago. The RNLI are taking an innovative approach to a resource problem. They will have a number of lifeboats coming to the end of their lives over the next 10-15 years and they don’t know what they can do with them that is both socially and environmentally responsible.
Old lifeboats have been sold on to other search and rescue operations in the past, but there is a limited market unsurprisingly. We had an inspiring and fascinating day, helped by lots of sunshine and a tour around one of the lifeboats that will be decommissioned. As you can see from the photos, there is a lot more to think about than just the hull.
The RNLI are running a competition to find solutions for these end of life lifeboats. If you want to find out more, check out the dedicated website and get your applications in by 22nd May.
